Emergency Team Simulation | Simulation Course For Florence Nightingale Hospital

Course Outline

This one-day interprofessional course is aimed at any clinician who may act as a member of the emergency response team in psychiatric healthcare settings. This includes: mental health nurses, healthcare assistants, care support workers and psychiatric doctors.

The course serves as an introduction to out-of-hours team working and is suitable for professionals wanting clarification and advice about the role of the emergency team. It seeks to increase the efficiency of team working with the ultimate aim of improving patient safety.

Participants will be involved in a series of simulated scenarios using actors and a high-fidelity medical mannequin. Debriefing models are employed to assist participants to learn positively and constructively from the experience.

Please note: this is not a competency- based course. BLS, ILS, PSTS and other mandatory, competency- based training should be up-to-date before attending.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course those attending will:

• understand the role of human factors or non-technical skills (e.g. situational awareness, leadership / followership, team working) in both psychiatric and medical emergencies.
• demonstrate improved reflection on their own capabilities in such situations.
• recognise when and why safe, high quality clinical care fails to be delivered.
• understand their role in emergency situations.
• describe escalation protocols and trust polices and guidelines in relation to emergency situations.
