Course Outline

This flexible half-day to full-day interprofessional course is aimed at the range of professionals who are involved in the care of patients in the emergency department (ED). It will allow participants to take part in an evolving simulated case focusing on the assessment and management of a patient experiencing a mental health crisis.

The course aims to build upon participants’ skills and confidence in the early recognition and management of mental health problems within the ED setting and to foster collaborative working. It will use simulation debrief models to allow participants to learn positively and constructively from their experience.

Learning objective

After completing this course those attending will be able to:

  • understand the role of non-technical skills, e.g. situational awareness, leadership and team working, when managing patients presenting with a mental health crisis.
  • demonstrate increased assurance in leading or working within a team in the management of challenging situations in the ED.
  • have improved confidence in the management of patients who refuse treatment in the ED and knowledge in relation to the use of the Mental Capacity Act.
  • improve their collaborative working with colleagues from different specialties and professions when managing patients with physical and mental health co-morbidity.
