Course Outline

This one-day interprofessional course is suitable for a range of professionals involved in the care of patients with a dementia diagnosis including: all grades of registered nurses, clinical support workers, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists and GPs.

The course will allow participants to be involved in a series of simulated scenarios focusing on the assessment and management of a variety of presentations of Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSDs). It aims to get clinicians working together to build skills and confidence in the early recognition and management of these symptoms. The course will use a simulation training debrief model to allow participants to learn positively and constructively from the experience.

Learning objectives

After completing this course those attending will be able to:

  • demonstrate improved confidence, knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of BPSDs.
  • understand the role non-technical skills, e.g. situational awareness, leadership and team working, play in both psychiatric and medical emergencies and reflect upon individual capabilities.
  • describe when and why safe, high quality clinical care fails to be delivered.
  • demonstrate greater confidence in working as a team or leading a team in the management of challenging behaviour with patients with dementia.
  • understand their role in challenging situations and demonstrate knowledge of escalation protocols.
