Course Outline

This one-day interprofessional course is suitable for psychiatrists and other members of the mental health team who may be asked to appear before a coroner’s court.

The course narrative has been devised and written by experts in attending coroner’s court and, as such, will help address many of the common issues and challenges that clinicians find difficult when attending coroner’s courts.

Participants will be given simulated past records before the training day. This information will be used to inform their evidence when they are called to the court on the day. A simulation training debrief model is used to assist participants to learn positively and constructively from the experience.

Learning objectives

After completing this course those attending will: • demonstrate improved confidence and knowledge in appearing at court hearings.
• demonstrate the ability to respond appropriately to cross-examinations by coroner, legal representatives and family members.
• be able to identify factors within the system that could be improved to prevent further adverse events from occurring.
• be in a position to better understand the importance of contemporaneous accurate documentation in all clinical cases.
• be able to prepare and present written and oral evidence for presentation at an inquest.
